In pre-1800s NW Germany in was not uncommon for names to include the prefix (affix or tussenvogsel) "Or"; eg Forename Surname Or Surname, where "Or" means "Of" sensu lineage or parentage, much like the Celtic "O'."

Thus " Forename Surname Or Surname" IS a single legitimate surname, NOT an expression of two possible surnames, & there is no confusion about lineage.

The practice died out in the early to mid 19th century.

Hi Mike… I’m hoping you can help the tree by updating this profile using a single surname to avoid using “or” in the profile name. When searching Wikitree, users will see variants in surname (unlike given names), so you might consider choosing a surname, changing the profile surname, and adding the alternate surname in the ‘Other Last Name(s)’ field. Thanks kindly!
